Randomosity and lessons in being MIA: 101

Posted on

I’m surprised I remembered my password! HA!! I successfully stayed off of my computer for two entire days this week, and the days I did get on, I limited my time to just what my battery would give me. And ya know what, it feels good! I do miss my late night chats a great deal, so I think I’ll need to set aside at least one night a week for some Love, G, ‘Chelle, and Tam. πŸ˜‰

G caught me on chat one day and I said “I’ve been MIA this week” and she said “you need to teach me how to be MIA!” πŸ˜† So, here’s what I did, or didn’t do….

  • Only used my battery on my computer. When it was up, I was DONE.
  • spent LOTS of time cleaning
  • spent LOTS of time with the boys
  • spent LOTS of time with Jake

And ya know what, I am very happy with the computer time changes I made this week. I hope I can keep it up. πŸ˜€

Some other happenings going on in the Hawkins House:

  • Camping on Monday. We are going to go camping from Monday through Thursday this week. I am hoping it will be a lot of fun and very relaxing for us. And guess what? I’m NOT taking my computer. 😯 We will be HERE.
  • We tried out a new church last weekend. Not so much what we are looking for in a church. The deal breaker was there is nothing for kids. They only have childcare up to age 4. After that, they sit with their parents. We really want a church with a kids program.
  • We went bowling with the boys this week. They are HILARIOUS to watch bowl. It’s so cute! Dylan does this thing where he points with both hands straight at you while doing a lunge type move after he’s hit the pins. SO FUNNY! Aidan hides behind something while he ball is going down the lane and then he jumps out from behind it when the pins go down. HAHA!! πŸ˜†
  • We’ve been working more regularly in their workbooks this week. We’ve set aside time before bed to do them with both boys. They are doing really well in them and Dylan just THRIVES on learning that stuff. He is CONSTANTLY asking to do them now that we’ve set up a regular schedule to get them done.
  • I painted part of the kitchen. I’ve decided that I now hate painting. I hurt all over from painting. I don’t remember hurting like this before when I painted….but then again, that was 5 years and 3 kids ago!
  • I have a new absolute favorite show that I’ve been watching. I mentioned it before, but JON AND KATE PLUS 8 is AMAZING!!!! It’s our new Monday night thing….watch that show and eat ice cream. Even Jake likes it a lot. πŸ˜€ I’m glad. πŸ˜€
  • I rearranged the living room ONCE AGAIN. πŸ˜† Seriously though, this time it HAS TO STAY b/c even I am getting tired of moving it around. I did have a little “conversational” sitting area at one end of the living room with the loveseat and chair, but I needed a decorative rug (yes, there I go with the rugs again!) and a coffee table to complete the look….but Jake vetoed that everytime I tried. Sooo, I was not happy with it and changed it up again. πŸ˜†
  • I watched my friends little girl the other day, her name is Romi (raw-me) and the next day Dylan said “Can Romi come back over and play today but I can just call her Kambrie instead?” HAHA!! Too funny!

You’d think I’d have more to report after such a busy week, but I really don’t. The boys played outside A LOT. A LOT A LOT. We had a couple thunderstorms which I am learning to like more and more. Jake and I have hung out quite a bit in the evenings after the boys have gone to bed which has been really nice. Oh yeah, we’ve started this new thing….. we each filled out seven pieces of paper with ideasΒ of nice things to do for the other person. It could be anything that we thought the other would appreciate. So there were 14 total. Everyday we draw one out of cup and have to do that particular thing without telling the other person. That night, before we go to bed, we either have already figured it out or we exchange papers to see what the other one did. It’s been kind of nice. πŸ˜€ And fun. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten ALL of the cleaning ones so far, but still, it’s fun knowing that you’re doing something you KNOW the other person will like and also knowing they are doing something for you that day.

Alrighty, back to life now. πŸ˜‰ Gotta get ready for camping and a trip into town this evening. I need to make it to the bread store before they close! 😯

It’s harder than it sounds….

….setting up a house that is. We’ve been in here over 2 months now and I STILL don’t have every room the way I want it. I think I get it done, and then I rearrange it. You just never really know how it’s going to work out until you’ve lived with it a while.

I have rearranged the living room THREE times.

The eating area in the kitchen over FIVE times.

The playroom at least FIVE times.

Rehung stuff in the playroom countless times.

Owen’s room FOUR times.

Dylan’s room TWICE.

Aidan’s room TWICE.

Our room ONCE. And only b/c the bed and dresser are way too big for me to be shuffling all over the place.

Everytime I start to clean, I rearrange a room. I can’t stop myself! πŸ˜† It took me TWO YEARS to figure out how I liked our first house, and then we moved a year later. Our last house I never got it to where I liked it at all. That living room was SO HARD to decorate. Another problem, and probably the biggest problem, is that I am SO indecisive about what I like or how I want something done. Makes me crazy.

I really want to get pictures up of each room when they’re done, but well, I’m not done yet. HA!! I have ONE wall painted in our living room. I MUST finish all of the painting before August though. That is my goal, and it will be done. For sure. Jake’s parents are coming in August and I want it done before they get here. I’m painting the living room, part of the stairway, the kitchen, the downstairs bathroom, and possibly the boys’ rooms. *sigh* That’s a lot of painting. AND I want to possibly paint a wall in the play room, but I haven’t decided yet. πŸ˜† Big surprise. heehee

Also, I still have some boxes to go through. Not really important boxes, but still, they have to be gone through. I was watching some show last night on HGTV, my new absolute favorite channel by the way, and this couple was moving out of a house they had been in only a year and they STILL had boxes unpacked all over their house. It wasn’t even decorated!! 😯 My house is at least decorated, but it’s not finished yet.

I hate the unpacking/moving in process of moving. With kids. πŸ˜•

Because I forget so quickly….

I totally forgot yesterday to mention a tidbit about Aidan. I seem to be getting a lot of material from him lately. πŸ˜‰

He fell on the concrete, bonked his head right at his hair line, AND chipped his eye tooth. 😯 Thank goodness for baby teeth!Β  He and I were outside since he was the only one up from nap, and we were picking up the backyard and I sent him inside to throw something away. He went up the ONE step and tried to open the door and his hand slipped and he stumbled backward. I guess he landed on his foot wrong b/c he just went STRAIGHT over and hit the concrete HEAD FIRST. *shiver* The sound that makes when head hits concrete makes my bones ache! I quickly scooped him up and came inside and tried to calm him down. He just had a little scratch on his forehead, nothing else, but he was still hysterical. So to distract him I took him with me to check the mail. He kept SPITTING on me while we were walking (I was carrying him) and I said “What are you doing?! Stop spitting on me!” and he said “I have somefing in ma mouf.” Well when we got back to our house, he said “oh! Here it is” and showed me something white that looked like a rock. 😯 UMMM yeah, it was a piece of his tooth! I came in and started examining his mouth and found that his eye tooth had a piece from the tip MISSING. I could NOT believe it! He says it doesn’t hurt at all so that is good. I was panicked for a minute though thinking “should I call a dentist? Should I save the piece so they can put it back on?” πŸ˜† Yeah, I had no idea. He seems fine though, so that’s good. πŸ˜€

Today while they were playing outside, I was down in their play room cleaning up. The bottom of the windows in the play room stop at the top of the grass, so if you are outside you can look right down into the playroom and if you’re in the playroom you can see straight out into the yard. Well I had one window open and Dylan kept coming over talking to me. At one point he said “This dump truck has 8,000 horsepower to it! It is a MONSTER TRUCK!” and then Aidan would GROWL and say he was a monster truck. HAHA!!! πŸ˜† Dylan kept coming back and telling me how much “horsepower” his dump truck had. heehee They watch this one video they have about trucks. One part is all about Semi Trucks the other is about Monster Trucks. They sing this songΒ that goesΒ “What’s scary and fun and weighs more than one ton? It’s a Mighty Mega Monster Truck!!” and the boys LOVE to walk around singing that. It’s so funny what they have learned about trucks from those videos. Cracks me up. πŸ˜† Boys.

Okay, that’s all. I just knew I’d forget if I waited too long. HA!!

I hate when I keep a running post in my head for days and can bring it up at random, but then I get here and see this blank space and suddenly my own mind goes blank. 😯 It’s like I can’t organize the thoughts all of a sudden. They’re all jumbled and I think “where to begin? where to begin?”

The kids have been really quite funny lately. For instance, Aidan’s favorite thing to say is “ever.” He tacks “ever” onto everything!

“Mommy, I towl Peanut dat he can’t do dat ever ever again. Ever.”

“No baby Owen. You can’t hit Peanut ever. Ever.”

“Mommy, we shoont do dat EVVVER ever.”

He also likes to remember a “wong wong time ago.”

“Mommy, a wong wong wong wong wong wong wong wong time ago, I was a baby. And you fed me.”

One night I was sitting and talking to Dylan and Aidan was talking but I could NOT figure out what he kept saying over and over again. FINALLY he stopped and then said “I was a baby.” I figured out that he was say “wong wong wong” OVER and OVER again for over a minute easily! HAHA!! πŸ˜† So funny!

Aidan and I have this new thing we’ve been doing at night before bed. We do butterfly kisses with each eye, then an eskimo kiss with our noses and then I say “now how about an Aidan kiss?” and he gives me aΒ big fierce kiss. πŸ˜€ It’s our nightly ritual now and he can’t sleep without it. When Jake puts him to bed he cries until I come up there and do our little kisses routine. Then, he’s fine. πŸ˜†

He’s getting better with Peanut too. I’m glad. He still has his moments, but I’m seeing more soft moments between him and Peanut too. He likes to just sit next to him and lay his hand on Peanuts back. It’s very sweet. I wish those were the ONLY kind of moments he had with Peanut, but he still antagonizes him quite a bit.Β  πŸ˜• Peanut is getting pretty good at defending himself though. heehee He growls at them and then does this pitiful bark that just makes you laugh. It makes Aidan scream like a little girl though. Peanut has backed him into a corner a few times and Jake and I just laugh at the site of a teeny tiny dog getting Aidan backed into a corner! πŸ˜†Β

Now Dylan, he is getting too smart for his own good. 😯 HA!! The other day, he got a psank (as he pronounces it) and he said “Mommy, you’re psank didn’t hurt AT ALL.”Β  You can imagine what came next. πŸ˜‰

He’s been in timeout a lot lately. Thank you “Jon and Kate plus 8” for that refresher course. By the way, she (Kate) is my new hero, but more about that later. Anyway, I put X’s on the floor for each of the boys, in different spots. So now they know where to go for timeout and I don’t have to direct them or say “no, you can’t sit where YOU want to sit you have to sit HERE.” Now there’s an X that marks the spot so there’s no negotiating. Yeah, he’s been sitting on that X a lot the last few days for ARGUING. Oh that kid can argue till the cows come home!! And we don’t have cows. πŸ˜• Jake came home and wanted to know why I had duct taped X’s on the floors. HAHA!! Oh, and when Dylan says X it sounds a lot like ass. πŸ˜† Sorry, but it does. How did I find that out? He was told to go sit on his X and he said “I’m not gonna sit on my ass!” and I, after almost fainting said “WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?!” and he said it again and it took me a minute to realize he said X. 😯 Well, so for arguing, his timeout got doubled. Doubling timeouts seems to be working with him. He HATES sitting there for that long. πŸ˜†

Today for snack they were eating prunes (which they LOVE) and Dylan said “Hey mommy, 3Β + 1 is 4!” and he was so proud. So was I!! I said “GREAT JOB BUDDY!!” Then I said “what is 4 + 1?” and he just stared at me and then said “5!” YEAH!!!!! I was super happy! So, that sparked a little math session right there and was adding one to everything. The only time he stumbled a bit was on 5 + 1. He thought it was 7. πŸ˜† I told him “buddy, do you know that you just did math? you added!” and he smiled so BIG! πŸ˜€ It was precious. Then we called my mom so he could tell her and he was so proud. Then we tried calling Jake’s mom but I couldn’t get her on either phone. Bummer. 😦

Owen has learned how to climb off of the couch on his own. That makes me REALLY happy! He learned doing it on the fatsak and then just kind of took it to the couch. He’s so cute when he does it too. It’s like he knows he’s accomplished something. He’s still not walking yet. He doesn’t even want to stand on his own much. He does once in a while, but gets shaky really fast. Jake is a little bothered that he isn’t walking yet b/c the other two were walking by now. Oh well, no rush. πŸ˜‰ He’s the last one anyway.

I’m convinced Owen thinks he’s a dog. HA!! He will NOT leave Peanut’s food and water bowls alone. At all!! I smack his hand and it doesn’t phase him. I remove him, he goes right back. The only thing is to put Peanut’s food up and out of the way but then he can’t get to it. I’ll need to figure out a better eating schedule for Peanut. Maybe before Owen gets up and then again at naptime and then one last time before bed. He eats a few times a day but MINIMAL amounts each time. This dog eats like a bird! 😯

Our weather has been really nice the last several days. It’s a welcome change from the two weeks of rain we had! The boys have been outside a LOT and even got sunburns on their necks. Of course Dylan’s has turned to a tan already. Aidan has a TON more freckles acrossed his nose and under his eyes. Oh I just LOVE his freckles. They make me smile. He is changing so much and starting to really fill out in his face. πŸ˜€ I love it. We played with water balloons yesterday and Monday. All 5 of us were out there having a water fight on Monday. Dylan got VERY upset when Jake and I were “fighting” over a cup of water and then Jake picked me up and carried me over to the hose. Dylan kept screaming “STOP IT!! STOP IT!!” HAHA!! πŸ˜† He later told me “You guys ruined all the fun.” Oh my!! heehee

We reserved a camp site for the end of this month. We are going the 30th through the 3rd of July. I really wanted to be back for the 4th b/c they usually do fireworks on base and I want to see them. You aren’t allowed to DO fireworks ON base of your own so I don’t know what we will do this year. Jake is really bummed. His two favorite holidays are the 4th of July and Christmas. πŸ˜† He LOVES fireworks!! Me, not so much. I can live without doing our own.

Not much else to report I don’t think. We’re pretty boring around here. πŸ˜† I say that a lot I think. HA!! It’s just the same ‘ol same ‘ol everyday of stuff with the kids and sometimes Jake and I get a night in there to hang out. HA!! We’ve been hanging out at night after the kids go to bed so that’s been nice. And we’re both trying to stay away from the computer and tv while the kids are up. We need to focus more on them and less on ourselves and our agenda. πŸ˜‰ Like right now, they’re napping. ALL three of them!! YESSSSSSS!!! heehee

Speaking of napping….I think I might squeeze one in there. πŸ˜‰

What do you think?

Okay, so I was getting some stuff done today and doing some more “decorating” around the house (while swapping out laundry loads…. evil evil laundry) and I found 5 crosses I had bought to decorate with. I also have these very cool sconces made from old wooden frames with iron that I’ve been having a hard time finding a place for. I needed something on the wall at the landing going upstairs….so this is what I did:

(looking down from upstairs)

(looking up from downstairs)

I had Jake check it out when he got home and he just stared at it and then said “It’s fine.”Β Β  😐  Β  FINE?! I said “you don’t like it.” He says, “well, it looks like you’re walking into a Catholic house.” And then, he started chanting. πŸ˜•

So, what do you think??? πŸ˜€

WOW! I am so glad this week is O.V.E.R.!!!! I’m excited for Jake to be home all weekend and to *hopefully* finish the laundry and maybe get some more painting done. Also, not being the only parent around for the next two days sounds pretty nice too. πŸ˜‰

This was a hard week with the boys. They were amped up more than usual. And amped up means NAUGHTY!! 😯 Really, it was a very stressful week. I am glad it is over. Hopefully I can start next week less stressed. That never helps. When they are amped and I am behind on stuff it stresses me out and makes me cranky and edgy. There were LOTS of time-outs, lots of early bedtimes, a few afternoons spent in their rooms, and lots of yelling on my part. 😳 I really really hate the yelling. And I KNOW what stresses me out and makes me a yeller so I need to be better about managing that. It hurts my heart at the end of the day when none of us have gotten along. I was probably a bit more lazy in the mom/wife area this week too. No reason, just was. That’s my responsibility,Β not theirs so I need to be better about that. BUT, their responsibility is to obey mommy and daddy and that certainly was at an all time low this week. *sigh* Next week MUST be better. I must be better.

Okay, done feeling sorry for myself. Moving on….

Tonight we went grocery shopping. OH JOY. It was kind of a humbling experience tonight. Let me fill you in…. When Jake was recruiting we got paid about twice as much as we are getting paid now. We took aΒ %50 hit to his paycheck coming back into the “normal” Air Force. Granted, we had other bills like rent and utilities, but we also got an extra incentive pay on top of BAH (base allowance for housing) which was nice. Sooo, coming back into the norm and living on base cut our check substantially. The last two months we’ve basically been using the $$ we got from the move (b/c if you do it right, you can make some $$ if you move some of your stuff). Now that money has dwindled quite a bit and reality has set in.Β  After the bills we have (truck, insurance, 1 credit card, tv, phone, internet, 1 old loan we are paying off, trailer) that leaves almost ZILCH for anything else, including groceries and gas. And we are paying MORE for gas now b/c Jake doesn’t have a government car like he did before for Recruiting. *sigh* Plus, well, gas costs an arm and a leg and an ear and a nose. And maybe a few hairs.Β  Anyway, after talking to a few people and really thinking about it for a long time, I decided to eat some humble pie and go on WIC. Even as I type this out I am CRINGING. Why? B/c I am a proud person. Bottom line. We have always cut corners somewhere to afford the things we want/need, but now, there are no more corners to cut. I even tried getting a job (which btw, I got and was supposed to start this week), but by the time I pay for daycare it would be all gone. *sigh* And seriously, there’s only about $200 left for gas and food for TWO WEEKS for a family of 5. It makes me a little upset (Okay, VERY) that the military gets paid so little and people who hit a baseball with a bat or shoot a basketball into a hoop make MILLIONS. Not that I want millions, but I also don’t want to have to resort to WIC either. *sigh* So tonight, we used our first WIC check and I felt like I was sweating profusely and that my cheeks were on fire. And I could have sworn there was a camera on me with people watching and giggling. At least, that’s how you feel when you now have to do something you’ve not thought too highly of in the past. Don’t get me wrong, I never thought BAD about WIC and those on it. I just had the mentality of “that’s not for me. We don’t need that.” And I was proud of that fact. Proud that we’ve never had to ask anyone for help. Somehow I feel less responsible now. I don’t know why.Β  Didn’t I say I was done feeling sorry for myself up there?!?!?! Geesh. Okay. New subject.

It’s going to be Father’s Day here soon. I need to think of something for the boys to make Jake. A card is obvious, but something else. He keeps insisting not to get him anything b/c he COMPLETELY forgot Mother’s Day this year. TOTALLY FORGOT. So now he’s being the martyr and insisting he doesn’t need anything. BUT, I don’t want the boys to not acknowledge it and I want to show Jake that it doesn’t take *much* to remember someone on a holiday. He needs lessons. πŸ˜‰ The zoo is also having a free pass for dad’s on Fathers Day but Jake isn’t too keen on the zoo here. Still, if it’s nice out it could be fun for the boys. oooh, I could have them go together and I’ll stay home. HAHA!!! After all, it IS Father’s Day. πŸ˜‰ heehee

OH! The highlight of my week? My new curtains. I love them. Like, really really love them. I took down the FUGLY venetian blinds that were up in the kitchen. Every last piece of them. I stored them away since we’ll have to put them back whenever we move again. I found some VERY cute curtains at Walmart and got a cheapy rod ($10 I think?) and VOILA! Gorgeous! πŸ˜† They make me smile everytime I come into the kitchen. Wanna see??

Aren’t they purty?? πŸ˜€ And yes, that really was the highlight of my week! HAHA!!

I think Owen has said “okay.” Really, I do. So does Jake. Twice he has said something that SOUNDS like “okay” but he could just be babbling really well. πŸ˜† HA!!

GCHYAYLES sent me a book this week! I was SO EXCITED to get it! I didn’t know WHAT she was sending me, only that she needed my address for something. heehee πŸ˜‰ It’s called “801 Questions Kids Ask About God” and I love it! She sent it b/c of my post when I talked about all those questions Dylan was asking me about God. I am excited to use it with him. I told him what it was about and he said “HEY! I ask you questions about God!” haha!! So funny. I said “okay well think of a question and we’ll look it up in here.” What was his question? What is God’s job? Do you think that answer was in the book? Of course not. πŸ˜† HAHA!!! First question and he asks one not in there. heehee Tonight in the grocery store he asked “How does God make food?” AH HA HA!!! So funny. I said “well God makes people who know how to make food.”Β  πŸ˜• I’ll have to look that one up and see if it’s there. heehee If not I need to make a list and send it to the publisher for “901 Questions Kids Ask About God” heehee πŸ˜‰ Yayles, if you’re reading this… thank you! And I love you! πŸ˜€Β  β™₯

Nothing much else to report this week. I’m hoping for a productive weekend so I’ll be back Monday hopefully with a good update! πŸ˜‰

Oh, and here is Peanut the Pup.

Am I a mean mom or what?!

Right now, as I type speak Dylan is screaming “I talking to youuuuuuu” and poking me in the face. Very hard to keep from laughing right now. Oops, a little laugh just squeeked out. Shoot. Anyway, I’ve decided to give them the silent treatment. WHY? Well, ALL DAY they have not listened to a single word I have said…AT ALL. I mean, it’s really been unbelievable how much they have NOT listened. So, my thinking….why bother talking the rest of the day?? I mean really…there’s no point. So, let’s see how this goes the rest of the night. This is going to be funny.Β  πŸ˜†Β  Yes, I am unconventional. πŸ˜‰Β  And yes, still screaming at me. πŸ˜† oooh, I just got poked in the eye. 😯
